Mission Statement

Our aim in the school is to help a child to realise his own unique potential in the light of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother's vision of integral education… An education which aims at the flowering of the child's physical, emotional, mental and spiritual personality. It is the progressive widening of consciousness which helps the child to manifest that within him, which is uniquely his, leading to an increasing satisfaction and success in individual living as also collective living, socially, nationally and internationally. Our endeavour is to impart education which looks beyond the frontiers of formal education. It is, in fact, a preparation for life long learning.

About the School

The Mother's International School is situated in the midst of the sylvan surroundings of Sri Aurobindo Ashram (Delhi Branch) Campus on Sri Aurobindo Marg. The calm, serene and spiritual ambience of the shrine of Sri Aurobindo, amidst beautiful lawns, lush green trees and flower beds, induces a feeling of peace and quiet.

Says Sri Aurobindo

The future belongs to the young. It is a young and new world which is now under process of development and it is the young who must create it. But is also a world of truth, courage, justice, lofty aspiration and straightforward fulfillment which we seek to create. For the coward, for the self-seeker, for the talker who goes forward at the beginning and afterwards leaves his fellows in the lurch there is no place in the future. A brave, frank, clear-hearted, courageous and aspiring youth is the only foundation on which the future nation can be built.

The school was founded on 23rd April, 1956. Named after The Mother, it was blessed by her with the message:

A new light has appeared upon earth. Let this new School opened today be guided by it.

And it is Her guiding spirit which has moulded the school and made it one of the leading institutions in the city today. From its very inception, it has been a school with a difference, drawing its inspiration from the teachings of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother. It follows and educational system which promotes on all round growth of the personality by imparting an integral education as envisaged by Sri Aurobindo and The Mother. This aims at building an integrated personality – a personality that is a harmonious balance of the different elements that constitute our being – our body, our thoughts, our feelings and impulses, our aspiration, and our seeking. It is a progressive and ever widening understanding of ourselves, with the soul or psychic entity taking the lead.

The School follows the three principles of teaching as enunciated by Sri Aurobindo: The first principle of true teaching is that nothing can be taught. The teacher is not an instructor or taskmaster; he is a helper and a guide. The second principle is that the mind has to be consulted in its growth. The idea of hammering the child into the shape desired by the parent or teacher is a barbarous and ignorant superstition. It is he himself who must be induced to expand in accordance with his own nature. The third principle is to work from the near to the far, from that which is to that which shall be. The basis of man’s nature is almost always, in addition to his soul’s past, his surroundings, his nationality, his country, the soil from which he draws his sustenance… if anything has to be brought in from outside it has to be offered, not forced on the mind.

Our Inspirations

“There is one divine Force which acts in the universe and in the individual and is also beyond the individual and the universe. The Mother stands for all these, but she is working here in the body to bring down something not yet expressed in this material world so as to transform life here -- it is so that you should regard her as the Divine Shakti working here for that purpose. She is that in the body, but in her whole consciousness she is also identified with all the other aspects of the Divine.”

Brilliant scholar, revolutionary, spiritual visionary -- Sri Aurobindo's world-view gives each individual a meaningful place in a progressive cosmic unfolding and casts our understanding of human endeavour in a new and purposeful perspective. The great originality of Sri Aurobindo is to have fused the modern scientific concept of evolution with the perennial gnostic experience of an all-pervading divine consciousness supporting all phenomenal existence. His synthesis was not a philosophic construct, but a realisation stemming from direct spiritual experience.
